On the way back to his hotel, Harry noticed that Susan was very quiet. His efforts to get conversation started about her family and about the dinner didnât even elicit a response.
Finally, he said, âOkay. Youâre upset about something. Do you mind sharing what it is?â
âI told you not to let my brother get you involved in his business. He promised me he would not ask you for money. It seems the two of you have no regard for my requests.â
âI heard what you said,â Harry said carefully. âAs a matter of fact, neither your brother nor I broke our promise. Roger mentioned in passing that he was extending his used car sales business to include long and short-term rentals. I responded that when I get my satellite office up and running here, Iâd like to establish a fleet service. Roger and I came to a mutually beneficial deal.â
âAnd the fact that I am his sister had no bearing?â Susan accused. âYou arenât dealing with my brother to pressure me?â
âTo do what? How would my deal with Roger in any way pressure you?â Harry asked. âI am astounded that you would think that. Frankly, I am a little insulted that youâd think I would stoop to use your brother to get to you.â
By this time, theyâd arrived at Harryâs hotel.
âIâm sorry, Harry,â Susan said. âItâs just that my brother and his wheeling and dealing drives me crazy. Before you came, he was pressuring me to ask you about investing in his business. Rogerâs gambling and womanizing mean he has to make a lot of money to cover his vices. I just donât want you to become his pawn. That would put a strain on our relationship.â
âOh, so we do have a relationship now?â Harry asked.
âI donât know what we have,â Susan replied. âBut I want a chance to explore it without my brother sticking his nose in where it doesnât belong!â
She took a deep breath to compose herself. Harry leaned over and kissed her.
âWhy did you do that?â she asked.
âBecause I like you and I want to explore thisâwhatever we have. And youâre cute when youâre angry!â
âOkay. My temper tantrum was childish, I admit,â said Susan. âAt least I didnât stamp my feet or scream.â
âNo, you didnât,â Harry said, kissing her again. âNow, are you up for a nightcap?â
âI think weâve both had enough dramatics for one day, Harry,â Susan said. âLetâs say goodnight and agree to take some time to assess where weâre going.â
âOkay,â Harry nodded his head as he leaned forward, running his thumb across her lower lip, clearly reluctant to be parting ways. âIâll see you for breakfast tomorrow morning at seven,â Harry said. âSweet dreams,â he added, giving her a kiss on each cheek and one on her nose.
His lips felt just like those butterfly kisses in my dreams, Susan thought as she drove home.
âIâm in for another sleepless night,â she told herself.
